Writing prize: final call for entries

The brief

The essay can be on any topic relevant to architecture and must be no longer than 1,000 words. The subject matter may be historical or contemporary. The piece may look at an individual building or buildings, or a subject pertinent to the practice, theory or business of architecture. There is no age limit for entrants.

The prize

£1,000 will be awarded to the winning writer. The victorious piece will be published in full in the AJ and the writer of the piece will be commissioned to write a building study which will feature in the AJ.

At the judges’ discretion, a Highly Commended award may be given. In the case of a highly commended writer, extracts of their original entry will be published in the AJ, and they will also be commissioned to write a building study.

Notes on style

The AJ/Berman Guedes Stretton Writing Prize will reward work which is entertaining, informative and thought-provoking. The essays should show original thinking and be written in a clear, engaging and compelling style. Arguments and analysis should be substantiated with relevant information.

Terms and conditions

Entries should not exceed 1,000 words and must be emailed to ajwritingprize@emap.com no later than 9 September 2013. There is no age limit for entrants. The competition is intended for those engaged in practice or students of architectural practice. It is not open to those who have a substantial body of published written work. Pieces should be wholly the work of the person submitting them. The decision of the judges will be final.
